Free-running training: This is how the dog hears even without a leash

The top priority in free-running training with the dog is mutual trust. If the human-dog friendship is intact, your four-legged friend will listen to you voluntarily and will come back to you if you let him run free without a leash. First, practice the basic commands for free-running training with your dog on a leash. The leash gives the four-legged friend security when he is raised properly, so that he can learn stress-free, even without a leash.

First practice free-running training with a leash

The goal of free-running training is that your dog obeys whether you are on the road with or without a leash. Dogs are not inherently obedient, they have to learn it first. If you let them off the leash too soon, they may run away, hunt wildlife or be scared. In the worst case, there is a risk of accidents in which your four-legged friend can be seriously injured.

For this reason, you should first teach your four-legged friend the basic commands for free-running training on a leash, later on the towline. Your dog has more freedom of movement on the towline, but you can still intervene if he has been distracted by something. Once the four-legged friend has gotten used to the leash so that you and you no longer notice it, you can start the actual freewheel training without a leash.

Important commands in free-running training

So-called recall training is always part of free-running training; In doing so, you practice with your pet that it returns to you on a certain signal or command. Even if your companion is busy with something, discovered something exciting or sniffed, he will come to you. This can be a whistle, or the commands "Here" or "Come". So that your four-legged friend likes to come back to you, you should not call him this way if something is uncomfortable for him. Otherwise he will feel insecure and lose confidence in you.

It is also important, however, that your dog does not run blindly towards you when you call him to you. Therefore, you should also practice the "Stop" command so that it stops immediately if, for example, a car drives on the road that it has to cross. "Seat" and "seat" can also be useful in these situations.

Exercise in the garden without a leash

As soon as you have the impression that your animal friend trusts you on the towline and listens to you, you can start the free-running training. For this, you can go to a dog school or a dog trainer if you feel unsure yourself or have doubts as to whether you can really keep control of your four-legged friend.

If your garden is fenced out, you can also train the freewheel at home. However, your dog should not just start running without a leash, but only after you have given it the command "run". Otherwise it will quickly run out of your sphere of influence and you can no longer reliably call it back.
