The beach vacation gets a bitter aftertaste when you see the many neglected animals. Stray dogs and cats are particularly striking in Mediterranean regions. Have you longed for a friend on four paws by your side and would like to save one of the animals? This is classy, but there are a few things to consider.
Adopt a dog: are you sure?
Before you choose a dog from abroad, you should carefully consider whether you really have enough space and can invest enough time for a four-legged friend. Choosing a dog entails great responsibility. The decision to adopt should not be a short-circuit reaction on vacation. In addition, not every stray dog is also suitable as a pet.
Adopt Spanish dogs: you have to be aware of this
Adopting Spanish dogs is definitely a good deed, but it shouldn't be rushed…
Prior check abroad: Have the dog examined by a veterinarian
If you decide to adopt after careful consideration, you will find the best support from local animal protection associations. They help you to find the right dog and ensure that your companion soon comes to Germany. All dogs must be examined by a veterinarian beforehand. They are also chipped, vaccinated and dewormed. A nominal fee of 200 to 300 euros is then due. The association pays the veterinary costs and the transport.
Important tip if you want to adopt a dog on site: Pay attention to the vaccination regulations. The animals must be vaccinated against rabies at least 30 days before departure. However, different regulations apply for each country. You should therefore carefully inform yourself about the respective regulations before adoption.
Transporting a dog on a plane: tips
When transporting by plane, it should also be noted that each airline regulates the transport differently. Small dogs are usually allowed to fly in the cabin, all others in animal boxes in the luggage compartment.
tip: It is best to get an overview of the most important conditions before you leave. A safe transfer is the first step in a better future for your new companion.
Adopt dog: bring patience
Note that the procedure, i.e. the veterinary examinations, usually takes more time than your vacation. Only when the dog has an EU pet pass can he travel to his new home. Keep in touch with animal protection associations based there until the formalities are completed. Flight sponsorships are often offered. Depending on the organization, you have to expect a total cost of around 350 euros for the transport.
